THE ARTS SOCIETY HORSLEY

The Arts Society Horsley

We are a friendly and thriving society of around 200 members who meet together every month (except August and September) to learn more about the arts. We are affiliated to the national Arts Society, and we use lecturers from their directory of over 250 speakers who are experts in their fields.

Our monthly lectures cover different aspects of the arts, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, gold, silverware, jewellery, embroidery, furniture, architecture, music, dance, theatre, film and literature.

For an annual subscription of £42 you can attend our 10 lectures a year (this includes tea/coffee served beforehand). We also have a party following our Christmas and July lectures.

Other benefits include our monthly newsletter, access to Special Interest Mornings organised by the Area Society and a quarterly copy of The Arts Society Review.

Our meetings are held on the morning of the second Wednesday of each month, at East Horsley Village Hall (Kingston Avenue, East Horsley, Surrey KT24 6QT). Free parking is available both outside the village hall (limited places) and in the nearby car park behind the village shops.

The lectures begin about 10:30am and usually last between 60 and 75 minutes.

To find out more about us and our lecture and visits programme for 2019/20, please look at the rest of our website.

Hockney Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery
Thursday 26 March 2020

This outing is to the National Portrait Gallery to see the first major exhibition devoted to David Hockney’s drawings in over twenty years, ‘David Hockney: Drawing from Life’. It will feature around 150 works, from the 1950s to the present day, that are currently held in public and private collections across the world, as well as from the David Hockney Foundation and the artist himself. Highlights will include a series of new portraits; coloured pencil drawings created in Paris in the early 1970s; composite Polaroid portraits from the 1980s; and a selection of drawings from an intense period of self-scrutiny during the 1980s when the artist created a self-portrait every day over a period of two months.

The coach will leave at 1pm from the KGV car park in Effingham, and then after the exhibition the coach will leave at 5pm to transfer us to Sloane Square so that you can have a meal in one of the restaurants there before the coach leaves around 7:15pm to bring us back home, arriving back at the car park by 8:30pm. This way we avoid the rush hour traffic, and it also means that you don’t have to start preparing an evening meal when you arrive home! It also gives time to chat with each other about the exhibition, amongst other things, and socialise with other members. There are a number of restaurants in and around Sloane Square, which you would need to pre-book yourself. But if you would be travelling on your own, please let us know, as we will be booking a number of tables at Cote Brasserie on Sloane Square. Of course you may prefer to take yourself off elsewhere after visiting the exhibition, and just arrive back at Sloane Square for the return coach home.

Ticket price is £38 (£30 if you are an Art Fund member), and tickets will go on sale at the January lecture. If you'd like your name to be added to the reserve list ahead of January, please just                                                                                         email info@theartssocietyhorsley.org.uk
